Cowan and Libbey Mills, Lewiston, ca. 1975

Until fire destroyed the Cowan Mill in 2009, it was one of the two oldest textile mills still standing along the Androscoggin River in Lewiston. Its neighboring mill, seen here to the right, is the Libbey Mill, formerly known as the Lincoln Mill. The Libbey Mill was partially destroyed by fire in 1999, then fully torn down in 2007. In addition to wool and cotton, the Libbey Mill produced acrylic blankets starting in the 1960s until the operations were moved to South Carolina in 1991.
