Description
The Stanley Family's cottage, "Sunny Haven," on Squirrel Island around 1914.
Built as a summer home in 1908 by F.E. Stanley on the site of an earlier cottage, it was designed by the Boston architectural firm of Chapman and Frazer, with Randall McLellan of Boothbay as the principal contractor.
Stanley, an accomplished architectural designer and experienced builder in his own right, devoted a considerable amount of his time in late 1908 on site, modifying the original plans and supervising the work. When finished, the cottage was considered one of the finest on the island.
In 1913 the cottage was renovated to include enclosed porches and a gas lighting system, enabling it to be used as a year-round retreat. This photograph was taken shortly after the renovations were completed.
This cottage and several adjacent homes were destroyed in a wind-swept row fire on July 14, 1932.
