Visitors, Squirrel Inn, Squirrel Island, ca. 1900

Contributed by Stanley Museum

Description

A group of summer visitors pose on the porch of the Squirrel Inn on Squirrel Island, around 1900 or 1901.

The little boy in the sailor suit sitting on the grass in the foreground is Raymond Walker Stanley; his mother, Augusta May Stanley, is sitting on the top step in front of the pillar below the "Squirrel Inn" sign.

The Squirrel Inn was built in 1895 on the site of an earlier hotel, the Chase House, which burned in 1893. Originally named the Hotel Eastern, it was renamed the Squirrel Inn shortly afterward. The Squirrel Inn was destroyed by fire in 1962.
