Description
A view of Kingfield from the east bank of the Carrabassett River, circa 1895.
The west end of the Old Chain Bridge (built in 1852 and demolished in 1916) is reflected in the Mill Pond. Stores and shops visible along Main Street are (left to right): the Kingfield House (an 1886 hotel demolished in 1918), W.E. Cummings Harness Shop, the Webster House and French's Block.
Note the chimney mason on work on the roof of the Webster House (the white building at the end of the bridge).
This finely detailed print was made from a Stanley Dry Plate, and was printed up as an example of the capability of their photographic glass plates. The Stanley Dry Plate Company was founded in Lewiston in 1884 by the Stanley Brothers of Kingfield. They established a branch factory in Montreal in 1888, and moved their Lewiston operation to Newton, MA, in 1890.
