Watermelon Race, Squirrel Island Fete Week, 1910

Description

A group of young men and boys take part in a watermelon race on Squirrel Island, August 27, 1910. Contests and races such as this were part of the traditional Fete Week summertime celebrations on Squirrel Island. The young man leading the pack of runners is Raymond W. Stanley, the son of F.E. Stanley, a noted Maine inventor most famous for the Stanley steamer automobile.
