Description

South Channel bridge in Skowhegan taken on the morning of December 16, 1901.

"Note damage at center and toward farther end. This was caused in part at least by the wreck of the Madison toll bridge, which arrived here shortly after midnight on the date just mentioned. It swept out the suspension bridge, farther up the back channel, and moved on its foundation the structure which shows in this picture. Traffic was prohibited until the water receded slightly.

~ Roland T. Patten, Custodian of Historical Views, 1929"
