Description

"By some this picture is suppose to show the high water of the pumpkin freshet, which occurred in the late September or early October, 1869. There are no buildings to definitely disprove this conjecture, but the timber jammed in the center of the falls and on the ledge below would not likely to be there as late as September. You are warned to believe the claim as to the freshet, for, if this view does not show it, no record exists. If it is a Pumpkin Freshet picture, it must have been taken after the water had partially receded, as that flood would have covered the ledges to the left and would have swept away the log jams above referred to.
~Roland T. Patten, Custodian of Historical Views, 1929"
