Skowhegan and Norridgewock Electric Railroad, 1894

Contributed by Skowhegan History House

Description

This was the first trolley car line to operate out of Skowhegan. The route followed the south side of the Kennebec river to Norridgewock, about six miles. Tracks were extended another eight miles to the summer recreational area at Smithfield shortly after it opened. Another summer playhouse and recreation area named "The Pines" along the Kennebec was added several years later. Unfortunately, ridership never reached expectations and the tracks were torn up in 1907.
