Description
Celebrations were held throughout the United States as the end of World War II was announced, including in the town of Monson. On August 14, 1945, an early evening broadcast on the radio led to the fire siren blowing for a full 15 minutes.
The Monson fire siren was soon joined by the whistles at the Portland-Monson Slate Company that echoed off the nearby mountains, car horns, and church bells as the citizens of Monson heard the news that their Veteran soldiers would be coming home.
The Monson band quickly assembled in front of the town hall and played until darkness fell as mothers, fathers, wives, sisters, sweethearts, and children danced and paraded back and forth on Main Street.
