Description
As part of the town of Monson's 100th Anniversary celebration a track event was held on August 19, 1922, as shown in this photograph. The day's celebration began with ringing of the church bells followed by a parade, water sports, and several track events. This photograph shows the finish of the Potato Race, won by Lyle Towne. Townspeople lined Main Street in front of Monson Academy as contestants participated in this athletic event.
A potato race is a running contest, where the winner is the first who collects in a basket or other receptacle a number of potatoes, usually eight, placed, as a rule two yards apart, along a straight line, and then crosses a finish line five or ten yards farther on.
Elmer Bigger was in charge of the track events, and the other winners were as follows: James Wing won the 50 yd dash for boys, Toiva Anderson won the 100 yard dash and the 220 yard dash, Aril Palmer won the 440 yard dash, and Laurence Inky won both the standing broad jump and 12 lb shot put.
