Description

David A. Donovan (1866-1922) was the son of Irish immigrants and worked as a letter-carrier in Portland, Maine.Donovan is pictured here, around 1890, as a Corporal in the Portland Montgomery Guards, a Portland based militia group and exhibition drill team made up of young men of Irish decent.

Donovan resided at the time of his death on Portland’s lower Pleasant Street. Many of the Portland Irish community were raised and resided close to the Irish neighborhood community referred to as “Gorham’s Corners” comprised of the meeting of York, Fore, Danforth, Pleasant, and Center Streets.
