Harbourside Inn, Northeast Harbor, ca. 1915

Contributed by Mount Desert Island Historical Society

Description

The Harbourside Inn was built in 1905 as a dining room and club house for adjacent summer cottages that were located on the harbor shore across the street from the Inn. The Inn was part of a summer colony development started by James Terry Gardiner (1842-1912) and a partner, who is thought to be William Wiswell.

The plan included 10 house lots with summer cottages designed by architect Fred Savage and adjacent land sold as lots to individual families from 1890 to 1907. The Inn served this intended purpose well into the mid-20th century when the Inn was converted to include bedrooms, bathrooms, and some suites on the second and third floors in addition to the dining area and common rooms on the first floor.

A member of the local Savage family, Emily Phillips Kenney Reynolds, purchased the Inn and several adjacent properties in 1927 and ran the Inn with help in the later year from her daughter, Mildred Dolliver Chapman Gilley. Ms. Gilley sold the Inn in 1979 to John and Gerie Sweet. The caption included on this photo reads "Northeast Harbor: The Harbourside Inn. Electricity came in 1903, and the road grade was lowered between then and 1906."
