Harbourside Inn Wedgewood platter, Northeast Harbor, ca. 1907

Contributed by Mount Desert Island Historical Society

Description

This platter is one of the only pieces of the full Wedgewood dinner set used for many years in the Inn and is owned by the present owners of the Inn, the Sweet family. (2013)

The Harbourside Inn was built in 1905 by on the Main Road entering Northeast Harbor. Fred Savage was the architect for the Inn along with several other buildings, mostly summer cottages, that were part of the larger planned development that included the Inn and was begun in 1893. Most of the homes built in the development did not have kitchen facilities and families and their guests took all of their meals at the Inn.

The dining service at the Inn continued until the late 1960's. By that time the Inn was converted to include more overnight lodging rooms, many of of which had individual kitchens en suite, and the public dining room and guest meals were eliminated by the owner, Mildred Chapman Gilley.
