Contributed by Mount Desert Island Historical Society

Description

Tents on field on Somes Sound during the summer of 1881. The Champlain Society called this area Camp Pemetic and inhabited it during the summers of 1880 and 1881.

The Champlain Society was made up of undergraduates from Harvard College who were interested in documenting the natural history of Mount Desert Island. The Society created a trail from Camp Pemetic into the mountains, which they called the C.S. or Champlain Society Trail. This trail lead from the campground up past Hadlock Brook and followed the southern shores of Lower and Upper Hadlock ponds to the base of Sargent Mountain.
