The Champlain Society was a group of undergraduate students from Harvard College that formed in 1880 under the leadership of Charles Eliot. The group was interested in documenting the natural history of Mount Desert Island and aspired to use the knowledge they gained of the island to enact plans to protect its natural beauty from development.
