Description
Frederick Hoyt is shown with his reflection in a window in Skowhegan.
"The story is told that Isaac Jewett, another Skowhegan citizen not noted for enticing form and features, had returned from a "Homely Man's Convention" at Portland, bringing a pocket knife awarded him for prominence at that gathering. At the end of a fortnight he walked into Mr. Hoyt's store nearby, laid down the knife and stated that his conscience would not permit him to keep it longer.
"Mr. Hoyt, it seems, had not competed at Portland, but Mr. Jewett felt, had he done so, he would have carried off this prize. Mr. Hoyt lived in the large house which is still standing, back from Main Street, not far from the old Coburn Mansion, now occupied by Colonel Roy L. Marston."
