The Warren Block, Westbrook, ca. 1900

Contributed by Walker Memorial Library

Description

In 1882, Samuel D. Warren, owner of the S. D. Warren Paper mill, commissioned John Calvin Stevens to build the Warren block in the Cumberland Mills area of Westbrook. The building contained four stores, several offices, a community hall, and a hall for the Knights of Pythias, and the Odd Fellows to meet.

In 1904-1905, Cornelia Warren, daughter of the late S.D.Warren, outfitted the gymnasium and provided instruction for both boys and girls. The storefronts have housed many businesses, including a Post office, pharmacies, pubs and tailors.
