Order releasing Capt. Holman Melcher from hospital, 1864

Description

G.S. Rugg, assistant surgeon of the 104 New York Volunteers at the 1st Division Hospital at City Point Virginia signed an order on Nov. 2, 1864 to release Holman Melcher from the hospital.

The order reads: "1st Div. Hospt 4th Corps Nov 2d 1864, Capt H.S. Melcher is this day discharged from the 1st Div Hospt and will report immediately to his command for duty. G.S Rugg assist. Surg 104 N.Y.V in 1st Div Hospl 5th Corps City Point Va."

Melcher, who enlisted as a corporal in the 20th Maine on Aug. 29, 1862, was seriously injured at the Battle of Spotsylvania Courthouse in May 1864, but recovered from his wounds.
