Contributed by Mount Desert Island Historical Society

Description

This photograph depicts the dedication of a large granite memorial to Joseph H. Curtis, the pioneering Boston philanthropist and rusticator who bequeathed 40 acres of land with a Lodge and trails on Asticou Hill to the Town of Mount Desert in 1928. This granite memorial with a bronze sculpture was created by R. Tait McKenzie and the stones used in the monument came from the Candage Quarry of Hall Quarry in Mount Desert. Charles K. Savage, trustee of the property after Curtis' death until 1965, designed the memorial.

This photograph includes, among others, the following individuals: Dr. Samuel A. Eliot, Frances H. Eliot, stonemason Samuel Candage, sculptor Robert Tait McKenzie, Ethel McKenzie, Francis Peabody, Harry Ober, and Charles K. Savage.
