CCC Camp, Indian Township, 1934

Contributed by Princeton Public Library

Description

This picture was taken of the Civil Conservation Corps, "CCC", 192nd co. camp in Indian Township, near Princeton, in 1934 facing south toward Princeton. The Far East Camp focused on forest culture, road construction and maintenance and extended West Street on what is presently called the Stud Mill Road.

The US War Department administered the Civil Conservation Corps. program. Fort Williams, in Portland Harbor, became the headquarters and training center for this program for both Maine and New Hampshire.

The initial purpose of the CCC camps was to give work to young unemployed men and to provide training for future employment. The CCC program later expanded to include men on general assistance. After physical training, recruits were sent to a CCC camp to work for a minimum of six months and a maximum of two years. The starting pay for a recruit was $30 a month, and $25 of that pay was sent to the recruit's family. Supervisors at the camp earned more.

This CCC camp later became a prisoner of war camp for German prisoners during WWII.
