Description
The New England YMCA built this timber hotel, also known as Ne-Mat-Ta-No, in North Lubec in 1890. According the book 200 Years of Lubec History, the rates for rooms were $2.00 and $2.50 a day or $9.00 to $12.00 a week and included baths, a dance pavilion, bowling alley, pool, tennis, and deep sea fishing.
The 500-acre facility was built by the North Lubec Improvement Co, a YMCA company organized for developing the organization’s New England Summer Encampment. The hotel complex, opened August 8, 1890 and burned August 6, 1921. According to the 1921 August 8 Lubec Herald, the hotel burned quickly and not much was thought about the origin of the fire as it was a dry summer and there were many fires that year.
