S.D.Warren paper mill and reservoir, Westbrook, ca. 1915

Contributed by Walker Memorial Library

Description

A postcard of the S.D.Warren paper mill in Westbrook as it looked around the turn of the century. The mill required large quantities of water for use in the processing of the paper, but because the river water was too contaminated with pulp from the sawmills upstream the paper mill tapped into all of the nearby springs for clean water.

By 1871, the springs had proved to be insufficient, so a reservoir was built as a settling basin for river water. Unfortunately, this still did not provide an adequate amount of clean water, until the addition of sand filters in 1884.

The reservoir was abandoned in 1925 after a new water system was installed and a new finishing building was built on site.
