Letter to Sarah Tarbox from brother Valentine, Brooksville, 1851

Contributed by Westport Island History Committee

Description

Valentine Tarbox writes home to his sister Sarah Tarbox, Westport, Maine. He writes about setting up his daguerreotype operation in Brooksville, about their new stepmother and about loss. Valentine was a traveling daguerreotypist in Hancock and Washington counties at the time this letter was written.

Valentine writes his letter from Capt. Babson's house, likely the home of Capt. Sivilian Babson (b. 07-26-1810).

Valentine (b. 10-18-1827) and Sarah Tarbox (b. 01-07-1823) are two of the children of Mary "Polly" and Samuel Tarbox. Their mother, Polly Tarbox, died in 1848; their father married Mary Fisher in July 1850. Samuel Tarbox was a wealthy landowner, fishing and shipping merchant, and town official in Westport Island.
