John W. Day from New Town, Virginia, 1864

Description

John W. Day of Co. C of the 14th Maine Regiment wrote to his sister Annie Mathews in New Hampshire, telling her that he had not heard from her since the Battle of Cedar Creek October 19, 1864.

He wrote, "I do not know wether you think I am Dead or not but I ashure you I am not."

Day, a musician, also reported that he had a new position in the quartermaster department helping to issue clothing and rations. "I have a good chance to live well," he wrote.
