Clothing equipage return, Augusta, 1863

Description

Capt. James L. Hunt of Co. C, 21st Maine Regiment, returned 56 knapsacks in "worn" condition to Augusta on August 24, 1863.

The 21st Regiment Infantry was organized September 1, 1862 and mustered out as a regiment on August 25, 1863 in Augusta. All ordnance and equipment was returned for potential use by other regiments.

James Hunt of Bath was 34 when he enlisted at the rank of captain. After the 21st was mustered out, he became a captain in Co. G of the 32nd Maine.

In April 1865, he was commissioned as an officer in Co. E of the Maine Coast Guard Co., where he served until July 1865.
