Description
This photograph is number seven in a series of nine taken at the Barnard Quarry. Information furnished by the photographer states that this quarry was closed for a number of years and was being reopened to continue mining for slate. Shown in the photo are Joe Vainio on the left and supervisor A.L. Brown on the front right, the person in the rear is unidentified.
Suspended over the pit in the "box" by a pulley system guide wire they could lower themselves into the pit by the cable suspended above their heads. Just beyond the men is the 100 foot open hole where the mining was to be continued. Although the operations were similar between Barnard and the Monson quarries, the employees at the Monson facility never used this type of pulley system but rather used a hoist attached to cables to lower and raise them from the mine.
