Barnard Quarry, Barnard, 1951

Contributed by Monson Historical Society

Description

This photograph was taken from the edge of the quarry pit and shows the men preparing to place dynamite charges in the slate seam prior to blasting. Once the hole was drilled a metal rod was used to place the charge.
Then once the charge was set the men would be raised to the surface by the box located on the right side of the photograph.

This photograph is fourth in a series of ten showing quarry operations in 1951. Although the location is at the Barnard Quarry, similar quarrying would have also be conducted in Monson.
