Description

Senator Margaret Chase Smith, elected to the Senate in 1948, relaxes a moment in her Skowhegan home from all the preparations for President Dwight D. Eisenhower's visit.

After spending time vacationing in the Rangeley Lakes region the President arrived in Skowhegan to address a crowd of 6,000 people at the fair grounds. The President was invited to the Senator's home for dinner afterward. Senator Smith made sure fires were started and tended for the lobster and clambake herself, catering services were set up, and a 9 hole golf course was ready for the President's enjoyment.
