A photo of the Somes lumber mill, taken from Main Street, Somesville.
In her book, "The Living Past" (1982), Virginia Somes Sanderson wrote that the mill was erected in 1763 by Abraham Somes I, shortly after he arrived from Gloucester, Massachusetts. Anderson goes on to describe the mill, how it worked and its demise by fire in 1933.
In this image, Somes Harbor is in the distance, and a two masted schooner is waiting for a load of lumber behind the mill. A white house is located on the far bank of Somes Harbor. Lumber mills, owned by several families, dotted the shores of Somes Sound from mid-eighteenth century to the 1920's.
