Contributed by Lubec Historical Society

Description

This man is loading herring on a sardine carrier boat using a dip fish net. The canvas over the gunwale helps slip the load on board. The location of this photograph is Lubec’s Boot Cove.

As the fishing industry grew in Lubec larger boats with hydraulic powered cranes for harvesting were used, but in the older days it was all muscle.
