Telegram on Union movement toward Vicksburg, 1863

Description

Capt. Charles S. Bulkley, quartermaster serving with Major Gen. Nathaniel P. Banks, commander of the Union Department of the Gulf, wrote to Brig. Gen. George F. Shepley, military governor of Louisiana, on Banks' behalf to report on the movements of the Naval forces under Adm. David Farragut, Real Admiral David D. Porter, Maj. Gen. U.S. Grant, and Maj. Gen. William Sherman.

The telegram notes, "It is believed Vicksburg will likely be evacuated. Porter says it is mere question of numbers."

The telegram was dated May 5, 1863. The siege of Vicksburg, in which the Union was victorious, lasted from may 18 to July 4, 1863.
