Order for provisional court in Louisiana, Washington, D.C., 1862

Description

A copy of an order issued by President Abraham Lincoln in October 1862 authorizes establishing a provisional court in Louisiana while the state is under military occupation by the Union forces during the Civil War.

The order names Charles A. Peabody of New York as provisional judge and authorizes him to appoint a prosecuting attorney.

The document is certified as a true copy of Lincoln's order by Edwin M. Stanton, secretary of war.

It is part of the collection of papers of Brig. Gen. George F. Shepley, who was serving as military governor of Louisiana. Shepley, who enlisted as a colonel in the 12th Maine Regiment, also served as commander of the 3rd Brigade and military commandant of New Orleans.
