Vacancies, recommendations for promotion, 12th Maine, 1862

Contributed by Maine Historical Society

Description

A document lists officer vacancies and recommendations for promotion for soldiers in the 12th Maine Volunteer Infantry Regiment. The regiment was stationed near New Orleans.

The document, which is not signed, is in the papers of Brig. Gen. George F. Shepley, a Portland lawyer who commanded the 12th Maine when it first went south. He then became commander of the 3rd Brigade, military commandant of New Orleans and, when the document was written in October 1862, military governor of Louisiana.

A separate letter from Col. William Kimball of the 12th Maine suggests he forwarded the list of recommendations to Shepley.
