H. W. Shaylor letter, Portland, 1916

Description

H. W. Shaylor of Portland mentions a business correspondence with magazine publisher, Frank A. Munsey, who had purchased one of Shaylor's penmanship compendium's and sold it back to him a year later, "evidently without the success he anticipated."

Frank A. Munsey (1854-1925) was the publisher of Munsey's Magazines. He was born in Mercer but later moved to New York to establish himself. Munsey owned 17 newspapers throughout his lifetime, he also authored several novels.

Munsey is most famous for a establishing a quick, inexpensive way to print magazines. His magazine publications were directed at working-class readers who could afford a magazine that cost around ten cents.
