Stearns Hotel building, Lubec, 1975, 1975

Description

The foreground Ferry Street runs into Commercial Street (across the front of the building) at the beginning of Pleasant Street (running along the side). Ferry Street guided visitors into downtown Lubec from the boat wharf in days preceeding automobile travel.

The builder of this house, Jabez Mowry, grandson of Daniel Mowry who served in the Continental Congress 1780-82, was president of the Passamaquoddy Bank in Eastport. He abandoned that municipality for Lubec after British occupation on July 18, 1814. Remaining in Lubec, he and son Samuel became shipping merchants and landowners, both later serving in the State legislature. According to the book “Two Hundred Years of Lubec History 1776-1976,” this house was built in 1822, the dormers added later. Jabez helped found the Masonic Lodge and was also the largest contributor toward building of the Congregational Church.

Except for color, the building appears much the same in 2012 as in this 1975 photo, at which time Carlton Miller was`the owner.
