Israel Washburn to Brig. Gen. G.F. Shepley, 1862

Contributed by Maine Historical Society

Description

Maine Governor Israel Washburn wrote to Brig. Gen. George F. Shipley in New Orleans in July 1862 to get suggestions for people to fill officer vacancies in the 12th Maine Regiment.

Shepley, a Portland lawyer, was commander of the 12th Maine before becoming commander of the 3rd Brigade, military commandant of New Orleans, and then military governor of Louisiana.

Washburn was hoping Shepley would be in Portland so the two could talk in person.
