Description
This Tichnor Brothers company postcard was printed as part of the Maine vacation series, from about 1930-1945. It depicts Bear Pond in South Waterford. Bear Pond is surrounded by Bear Mountain, Hawk Mountain and Mount Tir'em.
Bear Pond is used mostly for recreation, such as kayaking, fishing, and swimming. Camp Wigwam, a summer camp for boys, and Bear Mountain Inn are also located there.
According to local lore there are two stories about the naming of Bear Pond. Both stories agree that the pond was named in honor of a bear that died in its waters, though they differ in how the bear died.
The caption reads, "Bear Pond, South Waterford, Maine."
