J.M. Brown to Alida Carroll, July 1866

Contributed by Maine Historical Society

Description

John Marshall Brown, son of sugar magnate John Bundy Brown of Portland, wrote to Alida Carroll, his fiance, in Maryland, to tell her about the aftermath of the July 4 fire that burned a swath of Portland, including the Brown's Sugar House.

He wrote, on July 7, "Father's courage is superb he hasn't lost heart for a moment although his pecuniary loss is enormous. He has already begun to build on some of the burnt lots & others are following his example."

The couple planned to be married soon and Brown was overseeing construction of a home for them in Portland. He wrote, "the workmen begin again on the house tomorrow ... I shall hurry them now as much as I can."
