Description
This postcard showing the Norway Memorial Library was printed with a poem written by Norway Poetess Hortense Gardner Gregg Gates (1879-1967). The library was opened in December 1938 after being housed in two rooms over L. M. Longley’s store on Main Street from 1892-1938.
Mrs. Gates was a noted poetess and avid outdoorswoman, who held the distinction of skating on Norway Lake each winter for 76 consecutive years. Her poetry reflected nature, friendship and her hometown.
Postcard reads:
Our Library Home
This is our own Library
Of white we all have part,
A Gift to the Norway People
From a great and generous
Heart.
We will hold fast this Treasure
As years may come and go,
And love the gift and the Giver
More than she can know.
On our beautiful Library Building
A Memory Sea is set--
Always we will remember,
Never will we forget.
