Description

Photograph of the Cape Cod style home of Osmond Clark, a sea captain and Elizabeth Clark, a housekeeper which was located in the far eastern part of Surry. Two women in long black dresses and two small children posed for the photograph. Osmond sold the house to Curtis Clark in 1888.

The style of the house is a simple one. These houses were designed for easy construction and efficient heating, low ceilings and a central chimney kept rooms comfortable during cold winters in northern New England. The steep roof helped slough off the heavy snow and a large central chimney was linked to a fireplace in each room.

It was rare to see a Cape Cod style home with a porch or fancy embellishments. The Clark house was an exception. A summer kitchen was added to the left side of the home. Behind the woodpile is the roof top of the barn.
