Oil tank, Little Chebeague Island, 1947

Oil fires burning in this oil tank, which was located next to the firefighter training structure on Little Chebeague Island were put out by sailors learning shipboard firefighting.

The U.S. Navy used the island during World War II for recreation facilities and to teach firefighting to sailors.

The tank was labeled "Building 22." A 1947 appraisal of the Navy's property on the island done for the War Assets Administration listed the tank as four feet high and made of welded steel.
