The last remaining blockhouse of Fort Halifax had fallen into a state of decay and near ruin prior to revival of interest in its preservation.
The newspaper "Waterville Mail" reported on April 18, 1873, "We are glad to be assured that after many years of talk and neglect, definite measures have been taken to preserve the venerable 'Blockhouse', the sole relic of Fort Halifax in Winslow. It is now the property of Ticonic Water Power Co. and is leased to Dr. Crosby of this place, and J.W. Bassett and A.T. Shurtleff of Winslow, for the purpose of preservation..."
A year later, on May 15, 1874, the newspaper reported, "The Old Block House on Fort Point as been repaired and placed in condition to endure for another half century..."
This view appears to be of the north side of the blockhouse, looking south, with the Kennebec River in the distance on the right. The Sebasticook River would be directly behind the Fort and down a steep slope.
Date estimate by inference from "Fort Halifax: Its Projectors, Builders, and Garrison" by the Hon. William Goold of Windham, March 30, 1876; and excerpts of the "Waterville Mail" cited in the "Fort Halifax National Historic Landmark, Winslow, Maine, Preliminary Master Plan", August, 1989.
