Description

The Belvedere Inn was located on the western shore of Lake Maranacook three miles from the town center of Winthrop. At the time this postcard was produced, Albert L. Nelson was the proprietor of the Inn.The lakeside property featured a lounge and music room, wood trails, individual garages, private cottages with hotel service, a large porch, an expansive lawn, and individual log cabins. Sports and recreation were a draw to the inn and included tennis, boating, bathing, canoeing, diving, fishing, lawn golf, motoring, quoits, bowling, bridge, dancing, billiards, baseball, and golf. The Inn additionally catered to businessmen and women.

In 1939, the dining room was part of a series of recent improvements that proprietors of the Inn featured in advertisements, boasting efficient and courteous service along with well-prepared food. Dishes made use of vegetables and berries from the Belvedere Inn’s own gardens, as well as milk, eggs, poultry, and lamb from local farms. Drinking and cooking water was analyzed at the Maine State Laboratory of Hygiene.

The caption reads, "Dining room, at Belvedere, Lake Maranacook, Maine."

The Tichnor Brothers printing company published this type of postcard circa 1938.
