Description
Sgt. William A. Campbell of the 9th Maine Infantry, who grew up in Bowdoin, wrote to his sister in Bowdoinham on April 9, 1863, describing the First Battle of Charleston Harbor that took place on April 7, 1863.
He notes that the Union lost one of its ironclads. Campbell wrote that not much had happened in 18 months that his regiment was in the area.
His sister Sophia Niles and her husband lived in Bowdoin, according to the census, but Campbell addressed the letter to Bowdoinham.
He wrote, "Hoping I may some day meet you in a land of peace. May peace once more be restord to our land how many harts it will make glad to se the return of loved ones and dear ones and to se Farthers and Sons returning home..."
