Six E. D. Pettengill Company Trademarks for Shaker Products

Contributed by Maine State Archives

Description

Colorful trademark labels for Shaker table sauce, pickles, pepper relish and ketchup. Head and shoulders sketch of a Shaker farmer with a top hat on three labels. The E. D. Pettengill Company obtained the exclusive rights to market products produced by the Shaker community in Maine. These trademark labels were submitted as one page in a set of several pages to the Maine Secretary of State in 1892 in order to obtain legal protection for the design. These trademarks were first used in November 1885. After the death of her husband E.D. Pettengill, Sarah Pettengill purchased all interest in the company and carried on the business herself.
