Dr. Bennet’s House, Lubec, ca. 1910, ca. 1910

Description

Dr. Eben H. Bennet (June 20, 1848 - August 31, 1944) lived in this house at 18 Main Street in Lubec, about a block uphill from his office. The small area of Main Street visible at the extreme lower right suggests that the road was not paved or hard-surfaced when this photo was taken. The house became the Inn at the Anchorage Bed & Breakfast in the early 21st century.

In addition to his professional career, The Town Report of March 15, 1886 lists Dr. Bennet as Superintendent of Schools, a post he occupied through the 1902-03 school year. He expressed educational concerns in an imperative, colorful fashion. In the March 11, 1895 Report he wrote that four of the rural school buildings “are unfit for school purposes, being first-class cripple factories.” In the March 23, 1891 report he wrote that in one of the rural schools “the furniture has been handed down from the Pilgrim Fathers.” Another building “is not fit for anything except a sheep pen.” Bennet continually bemoaned truancy, and insisted that,... “the parents should bear the greater part of the blame for small and irregular attendance.”
