Description

Employees and executives of Dexter Shoe Co. presented owner Harold Alfond with a pair of bronzed shoes -- the 125 millionth pair the company produced. The gift is dated May 30, 1989.

Alfond (1914-2007), the son of Russian Jewish immigrants, grew up Massachusetts. He came to Maine in 1934 to work for a shoe company, rising to the position of superintendent.

Alfond and his father, Simon, started the Norrwock Shoe Company in Norridgewock in 1940, and in 1956, Harold Alfond founded Dexter Shoe Co.

In 1950, he started the Harold Alfond Foundation.
