Description

When the Three Mile Island Nuclear Power Plant in Pennsylvania experienced an emergency shutdown, the Nuclear Regulatory Commission ordered five other power plants to close, including Maine Yankee, so safety tests and alterations could be made.

In May 1979, the NRC allowed Maine Yankee to restart. Many protests accompanied this announcement. Here, Governor Joseph E. Brennan talks with the press during his weekly news conference in Augusta. The governor told the media that he would not use his emergency powers to close the Maine Yankee Nuclear Power Plant.
