Civil War musket, 1862

Contributed by Maine Historical Society

Description

A metal plate on the stock of this musket says, "From the battle at Gettysburg. Presented to the Maine Commandry M.O.L.L.U.S. by Major S.W. Thaxter." "D. Blanchard" is carved on the forestock.

The rifle is an Austrian Lorenz, manufactured in 1862. Both the Union and Confederate armies purchased these weapons, but the bores are different. This rifle has a .58 caliber bore, indicating it was manufactured for the Union Army.

However, Maine Historical Society donation records indicate it was used by a Confederate solider. That soldier may have picked it up on the battlefield.

Ultimately, Thaxter picked it up on the battlefield at Gettysburg and it became part of the collection of the Maine Commandry of the Military Order of the Loyal Legion of the United States.
