Grenville Mellen, ca. 1835

Description

Grenville Mellen (1799-1841) of Portland studied law at Harvard, and then opened a law practice in Yarmouth.

Mellen also wrote poetry. The death of his wife and only daughter in the same year inspired a book Glad Tales and Sad Tales published in 1829. He also wrote The Martyr's Triumph: Buried Valley and Other Poems.

Artist John Cranch (1807-1891) was born in Washington, D.C. He exhibited work at the National Academy, Apollo Association, Boston Athenaeum, American Art Union, and the Washington Art Association.
